Milestones

  • Clinical excellence is rooted in the ever increasing depth and breadth of knowledge. Thus research and the sharing of that knowledge build up clinical excellence.

  • The “National CME on Contemporary Developments in Oncology” was an endeavour of the Apollo Cancer Institute’s to share the knowledge on advancements in cancer management. This CME was hosted by AGCH on August, 2012 at Kolkata. It was addressed via video conferencing by Chairman of Apollo Group of Hospitals. Joint MD & Group MD of Apollo group also addressed the session. There were 14 presentations by 14 consultants from the ACIs spanning advancements in medical and surgical oncology, radiotherapy and BMT. An exhaustive discussion was conducted on clinical pathway-Modified Radical Mastectomy.

  • Establishing a clinical pathway serves centres of excellence in a variety of ways like, streamlining the clinical procedure, establishing the procedure on evidence, improving the standard of care, streamlining the cost to the organization, and increasing the possibility of patient turnover. The ACIs have taken a step towards that direction by finalizing a consensus on the clinical pathway in modified radical mastectomy.

  • Levels of care have been designated as assessment, diagnostics, consultations, medications, treatment/ interventions, nutrition, activity, education, discharge planning, and expected outcome.

Onco-Radiation:

  • WHO review of literature states that in the years 1976 to 2007, 3125 patients were reported to be affected by radiotherapy incidents that led to adverse events. About 1% of the affected patients died due to radiation overdose toxicity. In this setting Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata have started the use of a tools which will monitor the adverse events with the aim of analyzing and minimizing /eliminating them. The Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) is thus being used in Radiotherapy in accordance to WHO World Alliance for Patient Safety.

BMT Unit:

  • The BMT unit at AGCH has performed several BMT in the three years months with 100% survival.
  • Allogeneic and Haploidentical BMT, both types are done in AGHL.
  • We are now internationally acclaimed as a centre for Haploidentical BMT with international referrals.
